New YCNCC-Supported Research Highlights Role of Soils, Roots, and Biota in Tropical Forest Restoration

A new peer-reviewed article in BioScience, led by former Yale researcher Laura Toro, highlights the vital role of monitoring soils, roots, and soil biota in tracking tropical forest restoration outcomes. The paper emerged from a 2023 workshop funded by the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC) and reflects the collaborative efforts of the TropiRoot Trait Initiative and restoration practitioners. Together, the group examined how below-ground conditions before and after restoration influence forest recovery, emphasizing the need for integrative approaches that connect soil health and root traits to long-term ecosystem success.
