Soils

YCNCC scientists are actively advancing fundamental and applied research to improve our understanding of carbon cycling and storage in soils, and how we can improve the integrity of monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) for carbon crediting and other methods to incentivize the protection, enhancement, and scaling of this vital carbon sink in both natural and agricultural systems.

The Yale Applied Science Synthesis Program (YASSP) is a major YCNCC initiative that connects academic researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to answer questions about how land management decisions affect the valuable ecosystem services provided by forests, croplands, rangelands, and grasslands. With widespread interest in ‘climate-smart’ agriculture for climate mitigation and adaptation purposes, YASSP focuses its work in forested and agricultural systems in tropical and temperate zones.
