I am a marine geochemist looking at enhanced benthic weathering as an ocean alkalization method. This process aims to eventually draw down CO2 from the atmosphere and thus mitigate anthropogenic climate change. During my PhD at GEOMAR in Germany, I compared calcite and dunite as possible feedstock materials for enhanced weathering in the Baltic Sea. Since those results clearly indicated that calcite is far more techno-economically than dunite, my research at Yale University will now aim to elucidate the precise drivers for and the global potential of intra-sedimentary calcite weathering as a natural climate mitigation solution.
