Kevin Kroeger

Research Scientist
Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences

Kevin is a coastal biogeochemist who is investigating approaches to measure the comprehensive climate change mitigation benefits of salt marsh and mangrove conservation and restoration, and technologies to maximize those benefits. He is research faculty with the Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture and the Yale Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences; a Guest Investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution; and a Senior Fellow at Silvestrum Climate Associates, a private firm specializing in nature-based climate solutions. Prior appointments include 21 years as a Supervisory Research Chemist and Research Chemist at the at the US Geological Survey in Woods Hole, Massachusetts; Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow at USGS in St. Petersburg, FL; and a Postdoctoral Scholar Fellow at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He has PhD and MS degrees in marine science from Boston University and University of Connecticut, and a BA in biology/ecology from the University of Tennessee.

Kevin is currently a participant in the YCNCC Blue Carbon OAE project, and leads research projects including: enhanced rock weathering and OAE in salt marsh environments, with support from the 2022 NOAA/NOPP mCDR opportunity; development of a U.S. monitoring system for natural carbon and alkalinity exports from tidal wetlands, with support from NASA; and an EPA-supported field investigation of alkalinity exports from North Carolina salt marshes, to enable a first worldwide introduction to a GHG inventory. He is a Lead Author for the 2027 IPCC Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (Additional guidance).
