Forests & Soil

YCNCC scientists are actively engaged in fundamental and applied research to improve our understanding of carbon cycling and storage in forests and soils, and how we can improve the integrity of monitoring, reporting, and verfication (MRV) for carbon crediting and other methods to incentivize the protection, enhancement, and scaling of these vital carbon sinks.

The Yale Applied Science Synthesis Program (YASSP) is a major YCNCC initiative that connects academic researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to answer questions about how land management decisions affect the vital services provided by forests, croplands, rangelands, and grasslands. With widespread interest in ‘climate-smart’ forestry and agriculture for climate mitigation and adaptation purposes, YASSP focuses its work in forested and agricultural ecosystems in tropical and temperate zones.
