Researchers Gather in Brazil for a Workshop on Forest Degradation in Fragmented Landscapes

March 17, 2025

YCNCC Scientific Leadership Team Member Paulo Brando co-convened and co-led a workshop in Brazil’s Mata Atlantica region February 16-19, 2025, bringing together 35 participants including YCNCC Co-Director Liza Comita, as well as other representatives from Yale and from a range of institutional collaborators including Woodwell Climate, the Federal University of the Amazon (UFAM), and the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM).

The workshop focused on advancing Dr. Brando’s NSF-FAPESP-funded project, which investigates how interactions between trees and animals can help slow forest degradation in fragmented landscapes. During the workshop, participants reviewed project progress, explored new collaborations, and mapped out the next phase of research. A hike through the Atlantic rainforest provided a valuable break for workshop participants to share insights into how we can better understand and measure the impacts of global climate change on forest ecosystems.
