Matthew Eisaman – In Memoriam

March 6, 2025

Matthew Eisaman, endowed YCNCC Professor in Earth & Planetary Sciences (EPS), passed away on Friday, February 28th, after a difficult battle with cancer. He was 46. Matt leaves a remarkable legacy of impact, scientific discovery, and technological invention in the field of marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), and was one of the pioneers in electrochemical ocean alkalinity enhancement. His friends and colleagues in the YCNCC and EPS deeply mourn his passing and the loss to the global scientific effort at climate mitigation. Matt was brilliant while also soft-spoken, ethical, and kind – and a generous colleague, teacher, mentor, and friend. We send our support and love to his wife Heather, daughter Avery, extended family, students and lab members, and his friends and colleagues here at Yale; as well as to his friends and co-workers at the company Matt founded, Ebb Carbon; to his colleagues, students and mentees at Stony Brook University; and to his many friends and colleagues across the field of mCDR, and larger fields of marine science and electrochemical engineering.
