ELTI AND YCNCC PARTNER ON A PRODUCTIVE BLUE CARBON ECOSYSTEMS WORKSHOP

October 29, 2024

Yale School of the Environment’s Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) led a productive and successful “Blue Carbon Ecosystems Workshop” October 21 in the Sterling Memorial Library International Room. The workshop convened over twenty blue carbon experts from Yale, the U.S., Australia, and Indonesia to discuss these vital ecosystems. The event was funded by the YCNCC Workshop Program and led by ELTI Global Strategy Advisor Dr. David Neidel

The workshop featured talks from YCNCC Scientific Leadership Team member Dr. Noah Planavsky and YCNCC and YSE Graduate Researcher Mingyu Zhang on the Center’s cutting-edge research into how blue carbon systems can deliver durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) via the generation of alkalinity that is released via lateral transfer into the ocean. The revenue potential of these high-value CDR credits could offer meaningful incremental financing for the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems globally.

ELTI will be using the workshop output to develop an online course on “Mangroves and Blue Carbon,” and the YCNCC team made valuable connections with whom the opportunity may exist to advance field trials to further study, measure, and monitor the CDR potential of ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) from blue carbon systems.
