Workshop Explores MRV Challenges for Geochemical Carbon Dioxide Removal

Experts from academia, industry, and civil society gathered at Yale on May 5-6, 2026 for a workshop on “Leveraging AI to Predict Responses to Open-System Geochemical Climate Intervention” to discuss gaps and challenges relating to monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) of geochemical carbon dioxide removal (CDR). 

The workshop was led by Yale Earth & Planetary Sciences (EPS) faculty members Elizabeth YankovskyLuke Gloege, and Noah Planavsky, and was supported by generous funding from the Bezos Earth Fund AI for Climate and Nature Grand Challenge. The objective of the workshop was to collect feedback from experts and practitioners on geochemical CDR MRV gaps and challenges with an eye towards creating open source tools to reconcile model scale to accurately, rapidly, and economically forecast and measure the outcomes of geochemical climate interventions.
