Researchers from Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture (YCNCC) participated in Columbia University’s Navigating Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal: From Science to Regulation, held on September 19, 2025, in New York City. The one-day symposium was supported by the National Sea Grant Law Center, and YCNCC Managing Director Toby Bryce served on the event’s steering committee.

YCNCC Marine CDR Lead Gabby Kitch opened the symposium by providing a short overview on marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), then moved to moderating a panel on “The State of the Science and Social Science on mCDR.” Panelists included the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Adam Subhas, Duke University’s Celina Scott-Buechler, and University of Hawaii at Manoa’s David Ho.

The panel outlined the major advances, challenges, and gaps in the mCDR field before discussing lessons from other sectors, such as fisheries; the importance of indigenous voices; and U.S. domestic policy and international governance. In addition to the primary location at Columbia University in New York, there were additional satellite viewing stations in Washington State, Delaware, and Canada.

The findings of the symposium will be published in a special issue in the Sea Grant Law and Policy Journal. YCNCC’s Kitch will lead the “state of the science” paper, which will be a summary of the field for those with a law and policy background.
